A while back I found this little gem on Pinterest and thought it was cool.

I would like to have something like this to decorate my office desk, but I don’t have the skills, the tools or the materials to make it myself. Also, I’m too lazy to try. So, I will just talk about it here, and that will be it.

When I first saw it, I thought it was cool just as a decorative gadget, but I soon started to think of ways to make it even cooler. One way would be to install a voice box and a small computer like a Raspberry Pi or an Arduino. On that I would install an AI interface like a Google Home or Alexa. That way the little robot could be helpful in everyday life. Like a small personal steampunk assistant.
Another way to make it really cool would be to install a light in the eye, to make it look more alive. As an expansion to that I thought it would be hilarious to put a motion sensor on it to detect motion just in front of the glass. It should only detect motion in the field of vision of the robot, and only really close to the glass, or even on the glass, so you would need to touch the glass to activate it. Then I would tell a story about the robot being an alien intruder that I trapped and killed. When people lean in to take a close look at the dangerous robot and maybe when they tap the glass (Cause people do) the eye would light up, like the robot was coming back to life. Maybe it should even have a sound effect, like a computer booting up.

Of course, I don’t have the robot so these are all just dreams. The robot exists however, and was made by CatherinetteRings who makes lots of different kinds of robots and rings and other steampunk themed items. Credit goes to her, so go check out her work at CatherinetteRings Webshop.
